Warm Temperatures, Slow Action

GORDO BANKS PANGAS
May 3rd, 2026

It was a quiet week at our marina in terms of foot traffic and fishing action. For the most part, it was a calm week, with minimal wind. We are now experiencing warmer temperatures in the mid 80s. Water temperatures throughout most fishing grounds were in the 80-82 degree range.

Earlier in the week, most of the boats focused on the areas of Vinorama, San Luis, and Iman to target yellowfin and bottom species. You had to work hard at a chance at a nice couple fish. The tuna bite was very spotty and slow most days. Some lucky boats were able to land one or two in a morning outing, most of them on the smaller side, 10-20 pounds. The biggest tuna was caught on Monday, weighing 45 pounds.

These tuna came mostly on strips of squid. We had limited live sardines Monday through Wednesday. As the week passed, the only live bait options were caballito and green jacks.

Bottom action was much slower this week as well. A few nice grouper, amberjack, and snapper came in earlier in the week, though the numbers were not great. Best bottom action came on jigs throughout various rock pinnacles at Vinorama and San Luis.

The marlĂn bite remains steady. Most of the boats that focused offshore reported anywhere from 1 to 4 strikes on a morning outing. These strikes came on lures, rigged ballyhoo and caballito, and live caballito/ green jacks. Best marlin action was reported at the 1150 Bank and its surrounding areas.

The best action came closer to shore. We saw good Roosterfish and Jack action throughout the shorelines next to our marina.  While trolling live caballito and green jacks, a handful of nice dorado were also hooked. We saw a couple of decent size dorado come in every day while targeting Roosters. Some captains reported schools of 8 to 10 dorado closer to shore, though they would spook away when one was hooked.

Good Fishing, Brian
