Tuna, Dorado, Bottom, Inshore!

GORDO BANKS PANGAS
April 26th, 2026

We experienced similar weather conditions and foot traffic compared to the previous week. We did see an overall improvement in tuna, dorado, and bottom species numbers. Bait supplies consisted mostly of live caballito and green jacks, and bags of frozen squid and ballyhoo. No sardines were reported this week.

We did see more tuna and dorado action this week. Most of the boats focused on the areas of Vinorama, San Luis, Iman, and 25. These tuna were caught on strips of squid, though a few came on live caballito and green jacks. These tuna were in the range of 10 to 30 pounds. On good days, some boats were able to land 4-5 tuna in a morning outing. On slower days, we were lucky to see 1 or 2 tuna per boat. As a recommendation, if you plan on focusing on yellowfin tuna, many clients are choosing to bring their own squid from the grocery store as it has been thicker. If you decide to go this route, 3 kilos seem to be a good amount; if you plan on chumming more, you might need a few extra-kilos. The bait guys do have bags of frozen squid, though it can be limited depending on the number of daily charters.

Within the same tuna grounds, we saw better dorado numbers, especially towards the end of the week when water temp was reported to be around 78 degrees with better clarity. These dorado were nice size; we even saw a few in the 30-to-40-pound range. Many of these dodos came as double hookups (male and female).

Bottom action was also decent. If you put in the time with jigs, there was a good chance at landing a handful of quality bottom fish (snapper, grouper, and amberjack). The most productive bottom ground this week was San Luis.

Roosterfish action was hot this week. There was no need to go far as the best action came throughout the shorelines next to our marina. These Roosters were caught on live caballitos and green jacks. Many captains reported Roosters in the 30 pound range. We should be expecting bigger Roosters within the next month. On Saturday, one boat tried for Roosters for a couple hours and were able to catch and release 8 nice sized Roosters. While trolling these baits close to shore, we also had 3 African Pompano and a handful of nice size dorado.

We continue to see a decent marlin bite offshore, best action coming throughout the 1150 Bank and its surrounding areas. Not many boats went out for marlin this week as the tuna were more active closer to shore.

Good Fishing, Brian
