GORDO BANKS PANGAS

We are now at the most humid time of the year. This was a very slow week, both for fishing action and foot traffic at our marina. We had lots of rain early in the week, though it didn’t affect our fishing plans as it did not come with much wind. As we near October, and if the weather permits, we are expecting bigger groups of anglers within the next couple of weeks.

Water temps are very warm, in the 89–91-degree range throughout most of the fishing grounds. Most boats continue to focus their efforts at the Vinorama area as we continue to target yellowfin on live sardines. This was a much slower week for tuna in this area as the bite was spotty most days; lucky to hook into one or two. The few boats that hooked up reported dealing with sharks, either taking their fish or chasing it right next to the boat. Because of the shark situation, many boats decided to try for bottom, or cover ground trolling lures. Not much came from trolling lures, but a couple of small dorado.

Not much action to report from Inner or Outer Gordo either. We had one of our pangas try specifically for big marlin and tuna at both Gordos for 4 consecutive days; long 10-12 hour days. Unfortunately, they did not report any hookups. 

The best opportunities came from bottom structures at San Luis and Iman. Most of this bottom action came on chunks of skipjack, some of the smaller snapper on sardines. We had a good variety of snapper (dog, barred, and mullet), triggerfish, and some grouper.
